In the wake of FBI Director James Comey’s decision to retire, people are still asking the question: How could the FBI’s director recommend Comey for a CIA director gig, but now is selling his own plane?
According to an email sent out to airline officials by the former FBI official who bought Comey’s plane, the Commander DVR-5, the aircraft is being sold “under non-disclosure agreement.”
Here’s a note sent to travel agents to inform them that the aircraft is being sold “to an undisclosed buyer with no disclosure restrictions.” Here’s the email obtained by CNN’s Thomas Frank:
So you might be interested to know that FBI Director James Comey is moving along with his retirement. In fact, I have news… The FBI is selling his jet – and put it under non-disclosure agreement.”
The airline industry is aware that the plane is not going to be flying after Friday, but nobody is sure where it’s going to go. As of now, US Airways and American Airlines are not having planes delivered that are similar in size to the DVR-5.
Comey spent around $1.8 million on the plane two years ago, getting it to be certified through the Federal Aviation Administration to carry 14 people as police officers, investigators and counter-terrorism personnel, the New York Times reported in October 2015. It could have been used to ferry officials for the 2016 election.
In the email that Comey sent to airline officials, he mentioned that the purchase had nothing to do with his appointment as the head of the CIA, which was made public Sunday.
Comey told the airline officials that he had no intention of keeping the plane. He also expressed his frustration over having to put an export-control restriction on the jet, which he said was approved by the FAA for use as an exception to export-control restrictions.
Comey did not respond to multiple requests for comment about the plane.
