First lady Melania Trump had ‘no idea’ what to make of husband’s denial of Daniels’ affair

Melania Trump does not believe her husband’s denial of an alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels and was devastated when the claim was leaked to the public, a new book claims.

In Michael Wolff’s upcoming book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” reported excerpts obtained by CNN on Thursday said that Melania Trump was stunned when her husband posted a denial denying an affair on Twitter in January 2017.

“Melania was shattered,” Wolff said in the book. “She had no idea what to make of the tweet.”

The first lady later met with her husband in the Oval Office, where the two had a private conversation in which the president denied his relationship with Daniels, Wolff wrote. Melania Trump then stood up and told her husband, “The story is not true.”

A source familiar with Melania Trump’s thoughts at the time confirmed the timeline of the book’s events, telling CNN that the book is accurate and said the first lady was “in a tough place.”

“She was hurt by a lot of things going on,” the source said. “She was hurt by what she considered bullying by the press. She was hurt by rumors going around in the White House.”

The statement in question, released by the President’s lawyer, has since been deemed to have false information by Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti.

The first lady has dealt with her own woes, including a bitter fallout with President Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen, who she fired in April. She also canceled an overseas trip to participate in the United Nations’ Day of the Girl last month after news broke that her medical records had been leaked to the media.

CNN has reached out to the first lady’s spokeswoman for comment on the book, which hits shelves next week.

The book has already sparked an intense and unlikely media battle between the President and Wolff, with Trump calling for a congressional investigation of the author. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders meanwhile said Wolff has “lost credibility” after the book’s publication is delayed while Wolff self-published it through a new company, not Wylie Press.

As first lady, Melania Trump has also faced difficulties of her own. She recently signed a deal with the fashion and accessories line Bebe for a line of clothing and handbags. She has also embarked on a tour of government buildings to encourage women to stay healthy, a project that seems to be becoming a growing interest for her.
